Getting started with LuaBill

You can use LuaBill through its graphical editor without writing Lua or LaTeX. Begin with an example and a test PDF.

1. Choose your package

Download the package for your operating system. The Windows installer includes a private Python runtime and PySide6/Qt. The Linux and macOS packages use an installed Python and download PySide6 into a separate environment during installation.

2. Prepare document generation

Open Help → Prepare document creation. Select PDF, XML/XRechnung or ZUGFeRD, review the plan and start preparation. Suitable installed tools are reused; opening the wizard starts no downloads.

Wait for the example compilation and the selected format's checks. This tests more than finding an executable: it exercises the template, packages, fonts and output pipeline.

  • PDF needs LuaLaTeX, texlua and the template's packages and fonts.
  • Electronic invoice validation also needs Java 17 or newer.
  • ZUGFeRD also needs Ghostscript for PDF/A preparation.

3. Open an example and save your project

Use File → Examples and choose a suitable document. Replace all fictional seller, customer, tax, bank and item details before using it for business. Save the editable document as a .luabill project.

Choose an output folder under Files and output, check the totals and create PDF/XML. Review the generated PDF and, for electronic formats, the validation result.
